Join us for a hands-on, beginner-friendly pottery workshop where you’ll learn the ancient Japanese Kurinuki technique of pottery making. This method, still used in Japan today, allows you to carve and shape your own pottery from a solid block of clay. Under the guidance of an experienced ceramic artist, you’ll create a beautifully textured clay bowl or box that’s uniquely yours. You’ll begin by learning how to prepare the perfect block of clay, and then carve your bowl’s interior and exterior, bringing your creative vision to life. By the end of the session, you’ll have crafted a stunning, one-of-a-kind piece that can be fired and kept forever.

  • Learn Kurinuki Pottery: Experience the ancient Japanese technique of carving clay from a solid block to create your own unique piece.
  • All Materials Provided: Work with fine quality stoneware and all necessary tools provided for your pottery journey.
  • Step-by-Step Guidance: Learn the basics of pottery, including clay types, pottery techniques, the process of turning clay into ceramic, and the art of glazing and firing.
  • Create Your Own Bowl or Box: Craft a textured Kurinuki bowl that’s uniquely yours-perfect for display or functional use.
  • Take Home or Leave for Firing: Take your piece home as is, or leave it for glazing with pre-selected colours and firing at no additional cost.
  • 4-5 Week Process: Your pottery piece will undergo drying, glazing, and firing over 4-5 weeks. You’ll be notified when it’s ready for pickup, or it can be delivered within Mumbai at an additional cost of Rs 200.
  • Crack Disclaimer: If your piece cracks during the drying or firing process, it will not be glazed or fired.

About the host:

Garima Sharma is a multidisciplinary artist based in Mumbai, with a deep passion for the tactile and reflective qualities of clay. Her pottery practice seamlessly blends sculptural and functional forms, exploring the often-overlooked relationships we have with everyday objects. Through her work, she reflects on themes of nature, memory, and the silent presence of the inanimate in our lives, using clay as a medium to engage with the subtle yet profound connections we share with the world around us.

Her cosy studio is a space for both amateurs and artists to slow down and explore their creativity. Participants often describe her workshops as fun, creative, informative and her ad a knowledgable, patient and enthusiastic facilitator who brings out their artistic side.
